When the wall came down 30 years ago and in the months that followed a phase of the cheerful absence of the state’s monopoly on the use of force led to the occupation of hundreds of houses in the former East Berlin, many thought in a wave of euphoria that we could get something really new here.<\/span> Beyond real-existing socialism and west german capitalism, real freedom, basic democracy from below and civil diplomacy from east to west\u2026.<\/span><\/p>\n A lot has happened since then, many of the houses that were taken over at the time no longer exist, others are currently fighting for their future, still others have been able to legalize themselves, but often at the expense of political energy to the outside world.<\/span><\/p>\n And today?<\/p>\n Occupations are brutally ended, people are frithened and driven out of their apartments on basis of flimsy pretexts. As if possessed, luxury living space is being built obsessively, and cheap rents are being modernized at expensive, insanely high prices. Pubs and alternative locations will be quit and replaced for profit.<\/p>\n We have to do something!<\/p>\n Therefore, in September 2020, in a month of action, we want to remind you of the carefree time thirty years ago, and see, at what we were able to save from then to now, and above all think about which strategies and forms of action can help in our struggles for the city today.<\/span><\/p>\n And of course we will celebrate, on May 1st in Mainzerstra\u00dfe and the rest of the year in the whole city.
